George O'Connell

George O'Connell
Free Fall 4/5, linoleum cut, 24” x 34”

Witty, erotic, at times profound - never cynical in the manner of so much contemporary art - the monoprints, monotypes, and pastels of George O’Connell embody life and movement. The artist’s work forfeits modeled or sculptural effects to revel in line and pattern. The singular vitality of O’Connell’s work lies in the interplay between the object as representation and the object as ornamentation. Like a jazz melody, O’Connell’s images emerge furtively out of swirling lines and then dissolve again into pure embellishment. Uncompromisingly two dimensional in his approach, the artist layers semi-transparent images on top of one another to create an effect not of spatial depth but of resonance or analogy - the pictorial equivalent perhaps of memory. Velvet gloves, silk stockings, exotic coiffures, are only glimpsed evidences of a past gaiety as the strong linear rhythms keep our eyes moving quickly over the surface. As much as any other visual artist today, O’Connell subscribes to Hans Hofmann’s dictum that rhythm is the expression of life in space.
