Born in Unadilla Forks, a community near Utica, New York, Chauncey Adams spent most of his life in the area around Utica and Cooperstown. After his service with the U.S. armed forces in World War I, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia, where he studied under Daniel Garber. Garber’s influence is clearly observed in the fact that Adams’ style closely resembles the style associated with the New Hope School. Adams favored snowy woodland scenes with a focus on picturesque old houses.
In addition to painting, Adams was a pianist and jazz musician. He taught for many years in the Utica area and at the Utica Art Students League, and he was a founder of the Sherburne Art Society. Chauncey Adams died in 1965 in his home town of Unadilla Forks. |
