Born in 1844 in Suffield, near the Connecticut River.
Attended Suffield Academy. Wealthy doctor financed his studies at the
Royal Academy in
Antwerp and became his patron. Returned home after doctor passed away.
Worked for a photographer, then opened his own studio. Helped organize
Cleveland’s first watercolor exhibit in 1876. Painted portrait
of Rutherford B. Hayes, then governor of Ohio, before his becoming President.
1878, traveled to Italy and lived next to James Whistler. Taught at Springfield
Art Association.
In
1906, moved to Greenfield, MA and converted a barn into a studio.
Became a recluse. Known for landscapes of Connecticut River Valley.
Painted oil miniatures later in life. Produced over 425 oils, watercolors,
and drawings.
