Seascape with shipwreck*, 26" x 50"; 35" x 59" (with frame), s.l.l. - SOLD |
Little is known about the life of James Emery or the whereabouts of his work. He seems to have been active in and around Portland Maine and Mt. Desert Island in the decades immediately following the Civil War, and his known paintings are of Maine.
Emery’s work is characterized by a high degree of surface finish, a strongly linear style, and a dramatic light defining static planes. These qualities make his work reminiscent of the style of Fitz Henry Lane and Martin Johnson Heade and suggest a working familiarity with the style of American “Luminism.”
Emery’s work is in the collection of the Mariner’s Museum in Newport News, Virginia.
*Note that this painting is thought to portray the wreck of the City of Richmond. It is in a restored period frame, probably the original. |
