Patriarch of three generations of prominent artists, Charles Paul Gruppe was born in Picton, Canada in 1860 but migrated to Rochester, New York with his family while still a boy. Upon coming of age, Gruppe traveled to Europe and settled in Holland at Katwick Ann Zee. During his several decades in Holland, he attained consideral prominence. Gruppe returned permanently to the United States in 1909, initially taking up residence in New York City but eventually locating in the Cape Ann area of Massachusetts. In his later years, Charles Gruppe and son, Emile, maintained a highly productive studio on Cape Ann rendering numerous scenes of the sea and harbors at Gloucester and Rockport. The artist died in Rockport in 1940.
Gruppe’s work never lost the influence of his training in Holland. His best paintings combine the Dutch manner with the American Tonalist aesthetic. His work is in the collections of the Strong Museum (Rochester), the Memorial Art Gallery (Rochester), the Akron Museum, the Columbus Museum, the Detroit Institute of Art, the Butler Institute, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Royal Collection at the Hague (Netherlands), and many others.
