Born in Philadelphia. Inspired by a love of the sea and nature from his six year experience (1872-1877) surveying the shores of America of the U.S. Coastal and Geodetic Survey, he painted women, bathing and clothed, in plein-air, pastoral landscapes, children on beaches, and seascapes. Upon his death, the New York Times called him the "Dean of American painters in Paris."

Studied: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, in 1872, briefly before joining the Survey.

Member: charter member of a new Salon established by Meissonier; Paris Society of Arts and Crafts; National Academy of Design, Philadelphia Watercolor Club; Art Club of Philadelphia; Society of American Artists, and Century Association of New York City.

Exhibited: regularly exhibited at new Salon; National Academy of Design; Carnegie Institute; Society of American Artists; and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

In the collection of: Arts Institute of Chicago; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY City; Musee d'Orsay, Paris; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; the White House; Washington County Museum of Fine Arts; and Royal Gallery, Dresden.
