Born
in Halle, Germany. Painted cities, landscapes, portraits, Europe, harbors,
still lifes, flowers, and coastal scenes. Known for creating cheerful
landscapes that look spontaneous and fresh. In 1910, went on a bicycling
trip through England, France, Germany, Holland, and Belgium. He supported
his trip through commissions along the way. Returned to New York
City and set up a studio in Greenwich Village. Was a student of Robert
Henri and learned a dark Impressionist style. Became friends with
avant garde artists like Guy Pene du Bois, William Glackens, William
Zorach, and Maurice and Charles Prendergast. They also influenced
his darker work of street scenes and docks in NY City. His palette
lightened after three years in Spain, painting trips to Gloucester,
and time in Paris where he was influenced by the Fauves, Nabis, and
decorative painters. By 1912, he became known as a "colorist
of great distinction" by producing "paintings full of sparkling
sunlight." Later in his career, he painted buys harbors and
piers of Gloucester and Rockport.
