Born in Buffalo, NY on April 5, 1883. Supported himself with portrait commissions early in his career. 1910s, changed to non-commissioned portraits. Painted small informal landscapes, still lifes and nudes. 1936, Esquire called Speicher “America’s most important living painter.” Studied: Albright Art Gallery School, art Students League, abroad, NY School of Art under Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase and du Mond, Robert Henri again at Henri School. |
