About The Artist
Karl David Heerdt was born in Western New York and has always called the area home. For more than twenty years he has been a cabinetmaker and has designed and built homes locally. During this time Karl slowly became aware of and nurtured the art that was a part of him. Recently he has taken his love of art to a more serious level. Renting studio space in the Market Street art complex in Lockport since 2001 has proven to be rewarding.

Artist's Statement
Painting is a lifelong learning process. Being self-taught, I find inspiration from great masters of the past and their knowledge of materials and techniques, as well as their commitment to excellence. I am always striving to improve and I find that the more I learn, the more demanding painting becomes. For me it takes a great deal of concentration to paint at a level that gives me the results I am seeking.

Occasionally when I am painting an image that I am really excited about, a state of mind occurs in which I travel to the site - feeling the sun, smelling the air and hearing the sounds as they were first experienced. Even when I am working from my own photographic references, I am able to again become a very real part of the spirit of that particular location. I am enthralled with the beauty of God's creation. At this point time has no meaning, and an hour will pass as though it were one minute. Someone could be standing next to me speaking, and I would be unaware.

This state of mind occurs with my small alia prima paintings, which are simple in design and are completed in one focused session. These works then keep a freshness about them; nothing is overworked or labored and subtleties are not lost. This allows the viewer to participate in the experience and fill in the details. These are my best works and this is why I paint. My hope is that I have Adequately shared my vision, and that the viewer will receive the same pleasure that I experienced in creating it.
